Great Glen Way - North to South
A walking holiday along the Great Glen Way from Inverness in the North to Fort William in the South
We also offer these routes from South to North. For more information on walking these routes in the opposite direction, click here.
The reverse version of the Great Glen Way begins in Inverness at the North Sea and continues to Fort William on the Atlantic Ocean. The trails follows a natural geological fault line as it cuts through heath clad hills and open moorland.
From Inverness, the trail follows the banks of the River Ness and crosses the Caledonian Canal at Tomnahourich, before continuing through attractive forests and farmland. Soon, the trail enters Drumnadrochit, where there is a wealth of history to explore at Urquhart Castle as well as stunning views over Loch Ness.
Passing from the shores of Loch Ness, the trail enters areas of beautiful woodland as the trail follows Loch Oich along its shoreline. Here, the canal is at its highest point and there is an abundance of wildlife to spot as the trail enters South Laggan, famous for the spectacular Ardverikie Castle and setting for the TV series, Monarch of the Glen.
The final section of the trail skirts the west shore of Loch Lochy, one of Scotland’s deepest lochs, where thick forests thrive along its length. From here, the trail follows the Caledonian Canal to Fort William, with breath taking views of the surrounding mountains. With Ben Nevis looming over the town and bustling with outdoors enthusiasts, Fort William makes a fitting end to a beautiful walk through the Scottish highlands.
