From Inverness, the trail follows the banks of the River Ness and crosses the Caledonian Canal at Tomnahourich, before continuing through attractive forests and farmland. Soon, the trail enters Drumnadrochit, where there is a wealth of history to explore at Urquhart Castle as well as stunning views over Loch Ness.

Passing from the shores of Loch Ness, the trail enters areas of beautiful woodland as the trail follows Loch Oich along its shoreline. Here, the canal is at its highest point and there is an abundance of wildlife to spot as the trail enters South Laggan, famous for the spectacular Ardverikie Castle and setting for the TV series, Monarch of the Glen.

The final section of the trail skirts the west shore of Loch Lochy, one of Scotland’s deepest lochs, where thick forests thrive along its length. From here, the trail follows the Caledonian Canal to Fort William, with breath taking views of the surrounding mountains. With Ben Nevis looming over the town and bustling with outdoors enthusiasts, Fort William makes a fitting end to a beautiful walk through the Scottish highlands.

Holiday Highlights

  • Tracing the course of the Caledonian Canal through Lochs Ness, Oich and Lochy.
  • Walking the length of the Great Glen Fault from the North Sea to the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Arriving in Fort William with Ben Nevis looming in the background.

Mr Percival. UK.

Thank you once again for excellent arrangements/organisation throughout. Met some friendly interesting people from all over the world. Scots hospitality was wonderful. Already thinking of where to book our next walk.

Mr Douglas. UK.

Excellent scenery, good variation in route types, appreciated being away from traffic. Good tracks, excellent route marking - no danger of getting lost. Thanks for the great organisation of the walk. Everyone associated was polite, helpful and accommodating.
