About the trail

Created by Alfred Wainwright, the Coast to Coast path crosses the breadth of the North of England from St Bees on the west coast to Robin Hoods Bay on the east coast. Some of the most varied and beautiful scenery in the country lies ahead, spread over three National Parks.

Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walking tour clambers the rugged mountains of the Lake District to earn views over glittering tarns. It winds through the pretty valleys of the Yorkshire Dales, and sets out across the expansive heather moorland of the North York Moors. Dramatic coastal scenery waits at the end, with a twisting descent to Robin Hood’s Bay. Choose this country-crossing walking holiday and explore the best landscapes of Northern England.

We offer multiple holiday options along this trail. If you wish to experience the entire trail, simply select the first option from the list below.

Your Itinerary

This itinerary lists our preferred overnight stops for this tour. Sometimes there may be a shortage of available accommodation in a preferred location, in which case we will transfer you from the trail to your accommodation and back again at no extra charge. Overnight stops marked with a (T) will always require transfers as standard.

Overnight stops marked with an (L) have very limited accommodation, and therefore more often than not will also require a transfer, particularly on bank holidays and weekends. We will use non-transfer accommodation wherever possible.

The daily mileages quoted are average trail miles only and do not include the distance from the trail to your accommodation. We do not expect you to have to travel more than a mile from the trail to your accommodation in most cases; should your accommodation be further than this, transfers will be provided as standard if practical. A very limited number of stops will require you to travel on foot up to two miles off the trail, however these instances will be clearly communicated to you if applicable.

Further transfers may also be required due to some accommodations having a two-night minimum booking policy, especially at weekends.

Below are the additional costs that may apply depending on your requirements. Dog-friendly tours are subject to a Daily Dog Charge, which will be listed below if applicable. Our standard prices per person are based upon two people sharing a room; if you are on your own, or are part of a group but require a room of your own, then the Solo Traveller or Single Supplements apply respectively:

A note about transfers
Solo Traveller Supplement
£60.00 per person / per night
Single Supplement
£50.00 per person / per night

You can add rest days at any of the overnight stops:

Visiting the array of charming villages and welcoming towns scattered along the route.

What's included?

Extra Nights & Rest Days

An extra night gives you the chance to explore some of the villages and old market towns along the trail, catch up with writing postcards or to simply relax and give those weary legs a rest.

Rosthwaite is a good choice for a rest day. There are many lovely walks in the hills around Borrowdale or you could catch a bus into the bustling little town of Keswick.

If you prefer somewhere quieter, we suggest taking a rest day in Patterdale. A terrific walk here starts by taking one of the iconic Ullswater Steamers across the lake and returning along the lakeshore path.

The old market town of Kirkby Stephen is also a good place to take an extra night. Don't miss the unusual 'Bound Devil', a figure of Satan chained and horned in the ancient church of St. Stephen.

In the Yorkshire Dales, Reeth offers many short walks from the centre of the village and the Swaledale folk museum is fascinating. Richmond, with its cobbled streets and market place, Norman castle, unusual church, Georgian theatre, museums and shops is also a popular stop.

Finally, on completing your walk, a popular location to celebrate your achievement and rest your weary legs is Robin Hood's Bay, which is within easy reach of Whitby, its abbey, the Captain Cook Museum and St Mary's church. The interior of this intriguing church was altered in 1612 to resemble the lower deck of a wooden sailing ship.

You can add rest days at any of the overnight stops:

Customer reviews from the Coast to Coast Walk

“Thoroughly enjoyed, a great experience with varied walking, not to mention the challenge of walking across the entire country. Some outstanding accommodation booked, and it's lovely to start a day's walk knowing that wherever you're headed is going to be an excellent night. Have hardly stopped talking about it and have also been using it to inspire my Year 4 lessons this week, talking about scales, measurement and compass directions.”
Mr Pickup, UK
“A very nice period without real busy towns and traffic, good way to see the diversity of landscape and people. The start was as expected the hard part because length of track and the weather in the Lake district.”
Mr Kingma, Netherlands
“Amazing experience. The chosen B&B's were mostly all fabulous.”
Mrs Darley, UK
“We are back home in Oz after a fantastic UK holiday.”
Mr Guthrie, Australia
“We had an excellent walk! All the logistics worked out very well.”
Mr Abrams, Canada
“3rd time we have walked the C2C. Really enjoyed it. Weather was a little inclement in the first week but still enjoyed every bit of it. Accommodation very good. Baggage transfer excellent.”
Mrs Rudkin, UK
“Well organised and the logistic for people and luggage generally worked well.”
Mr Brown, UK
“Everything I’ve come to expect from Contours. Lucky with the weather. Accommodation was all up to scratch! All good. A definite recommendation to walkers who have yet to try the C2C. Keep up the good work!”
Mr Cooper, UK
“Absolutely spectacular! Possibly the hike of my lifetime... I climbed mountains, did precarious rocky scrambles, crossed fast flowing streams and peat bogs, stayed in a haunted B&B, braved vicious dogs and a talking rat, saw a man risk his life in pursuit of his hat, watched hares dancing, was entertained by a parrot, took photos of most spectacular waterfalls and walked across the wildest places imaginable... Truly unforgettable...”
