About this route

The full Dee Way walking trail travels inland from the shoreline, exploring the Welsh Borders and swinging out into North Wales while following the winding path of the River Dee all the way to the edge of the Snowdonia National Park.

There are plenty of historic landmarks to keep keen historians entertained along the trail, including ancient castles and impressive aqueducts to name but a few. Those wishing to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Welsh countryside will enjoy meandering through the Dee Valley, filled with colourful plantlife and backed by a range of fantastic mountains.

This itinerary lists our preferred overnight stops for this tour. Sometimes there may be a shortage of available accommodation in a preferred location, in which case we will transfer you from the trail to your accommodation and back again at no extra charge. Overnight stops marked with a (T) will always require transfers as standard.

The daily mileages quoted are average trail miles only and do not include the distance from the trail to your accommodation. We do not expect you to have to walk more than a mile from the trail to your accommodation; should your accommodation be further than this, transfers will be provided as standard.

Our standard prices per person are based upon two people sharing a room; if you are walking on your own, or are part of a group but require a room of your own, then the Solo Walker or Single Supplements apply respectively:

Extra Nights & Rest Days

Spending an extra night absorbing your surroundings can be an excellent way to make the most of your holiday.

If you would like to taste some of the diverse history of Wales, consider a day of exploring the Cathedral city of Chester. Here, you can take a boat along the River Dee, browse through shops surrounded by wonderful architecture, visit the largest stone-built Roman Amphitheatre in Britain or even visit Chester Zoo, with regular buses running from Chester Town Hall.

If you prefer to spend your rest day somewhere quieter, Chirk may be a good choice. With an impressive 14th century castle and the nearby World Heritage Site of Pontcysyllte, the surrounding area offers much to discover.

The small town of Llangollen is another good choice for an extra night. Packed with quaint shops and cafes, the town is brimming with interesting places to visit. Consider taking a picnic to the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey, taking a walk to the ancient ruin of Castell Dinas Bran, visiting Plas Newydd, once home to the Ladies of Llangollen, or taking a journey along the Llangollen canal on a horse drawn barge.

By Air - The most convenient major city and international airports are Liverpool John Lennon and Manchester.

By Rail - There is a rail station at the start of the trail (Chester & Flint). The nearest rail station to the end of the trail (Bala) is at Ruabon (about 28 miles away).

By Bus - Various bus services run to Chester (for Flint) and from Bala.

From London - Trains run from London Euston station to Chester and Flint.

Return To The Start - The easiest way to return to the start of the trail, is to take a bus from Bala to Ruabon, then catch the the train from here to Flint.
