About this route

The East Lakes Short Break explores the shores of Ullswater and Haweswater, along with the fells and valleys surrounding them. The trail begins from Pooley Bridge and follows lakeside paths through meadows, lush pastures and ancient woodland, winding up through the hills and passing drystone walls along the way.

The fine viewpoints of Kidsty Pike and Heughscar Hill offer glorious views over the mountains and lakes, while each little village and hamlet on route offers warm welcomes and glimpses into the local history. Other sites of interest along the walk include mysterious stone circles, the drowned village of Mardale Green and intriguing Iron Age hillforts.
