About this route

The Westmorland Way Highlights tour is a shorter, but no less scenic walk through the old county of Westmorland. It starts in the village of Pooley Bridge and continues through some of Cumbria’s most picturesque scenery to the bustling town of Ambleside.

The trail takes in a mixture of atmospheric woodland, dramatic fells, lakeside paths, tranquil valleys and an array of charming settlements.

The walk also encounters impressive stone circles and amazing waterfalls, as well as plenty of intriguing history to satisfy those keen in discovering the region’s colourful past.

This itinerary lists our preferred overnight stops for this tour. Sometimes there may be a shortage of available accommodation in a preferred location, in which case we will transfer you from the trail to your accommodation and back again at no extra charge. Overnight stops marked with a (T) will always require transfers as standard.

The daily mileages quoted are average trail miles only and do not include the distance from the trail to your accommodation. We do not expect you to have to walk more than a mile from the trail to your accommodation; should your accommodation be further than this, transfers will be provided as standard.

Below are the additional costs that may apply depending on your requirements. Dog friendly tours are subject to a Daily Dog Charge, which will be listed below if applicable. Our standard prices per person are based upon two people sharing a room; if you are walking on your own, or are part of a group but require a room of your own, then the Solo Walker or Single Supplements apply respectively:

Extra Nights & Rest Days

If you would like to take some extra time to explore the wonderful locations along the trail, an extra night is the perfect way to extend your holiday.

Patterdale is a lovely little village and is a good choice if you would like to climb Helvellyn, one of the finest mountains in the Lake District.

There is plenty to see and do in the pretty village of Grasmere, particularly for fans of literature. Here you can visit Dove Cottage, the best-known home of William Wordsworth, the school where Wordsworth once taught, now home to Sarah Nelson's famous Gingerbread Shop and St. Oswald's church, the last resting place of the Wordsworth family.

By Air - The most convenient major city and international airports are Glasgow, Glasgow Prestwick and Manchester.

By Rail - The nearest rail station to the start of the trail (Pooley Bridge) is at Penrith - North Lakes (about 6 miles away). The nearest rail station to the end of the trail (Ambleside) is at Windermere (about 5 miles away).

By Bus - Few bus services run to Pooley Bridge. Various bus services run from Ambleside.

From London - Trains run from London Euston station to Penrith - North Lakes. From there a bus/taxi will be required to Pooley Bridge.

Return To The Start - The easiest way to return to the start of the trail, is to take a taxi from Ambleside to Pooley Bridge.
