About the trail

From the wild Cambrian Mountains flows the longest river in Britain: the River Severn. For years it supported the industrial revolution in Shropshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, and this busy history left rural wharves and busy inns dotted along its length. These make the Severn an accessible – and these days far more peaceful – setting for a relaxing, largely downhill walk that culminates in a meander along the sandy shores of the Severn Beach.

With the powerful Severn Bore sweeping along the broader sections of the river, the Severn Way provides a unique look into a beautiful force of nature, and all it has provided for the people who live along it.

We offer multiple holiday options along this trail. If you wish to experience the entire trail, simply select the first option from the list below.

Severn Way

The full Severn Way trail journeys 215 miles from the mountainous landscapes of mid-Wales all the way to the pretty Severn Beach in the south of England. The route stays close to the River Severn throughout, tracing its journey from its source above Hafren Forest in the Cambrian Mountains all the way to the sea.

Along with excellent riverside scenery thoughout, the Severn Way passes through dozens of rural towns and villages, each with their own fascinating stories to tell about how the longest river in Britain helped to shape this wonderful corner of the United Kingdom.

“I enjoyed the holiday and all the accommodation Contours arranged.”
Mr Richardson, UK
“The Severn Way is a pleasant and interesting walk which is not too taxing. It makes a pleasant change from toiling uphill and down dale.”
Mr Rooke, UK
“Walk was nice countryside. Good things were some of the lodgings - we enjoyed the Woodberry in Bridgnorth. Very spacious and clean rooms, excellent bar and restaurant. Also Best Western in Ironbridge and the lodgings in Bewdley were nice.”
Dr Haemig, USA
“A great experience to follow a river from its source (a boggy pool on a mountain) to a mighty four mile wide estuary. It was so varied, changing all the time and I loved it all.”
