Created by Alfred Wainwright, the Coast to Coast Walk crosses the breadth of the North of England from St Bees on the west coast to Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast. Some of the most varied and beautiful scenery in the country lies ahead, spread over three National Parks.
Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk clambers the rugged mountains of the Lake District to earn views over glittering tarns. It winds through the pretty valleys of the Yorkshire Dales and sets out across the expansive heather moorland of the North York Moors. Dramatic coastal scenery waits at the end, with a twisting descent to Robin Hood’s Bay.
The Coast to Coast Walk became a National Trail in March 2026, with new waymarking completed throughout. There’s never been a better time to choose this country-crossing walking holiday and explore the best landscapes of Northern England.

“Absolutely loved the walk. The scenery was fabulous, the people we met on the walk, our hosts, our taxi drivers and all the locals were wonderful. The standard of accommodation was excellent. The standard of accommodation was excellent. The walk was challenging and did require some navigation skills - the trail is not well marked but finding our way was half the fun. We had a fabulous time and were disappointed when day 16 arrived - we wanted to keep going. We were impressed with the standard of accommodation, the hosts were all extremely welcoming and all the transfers went well, even the one we didn't contact in the morning. We left our walking poles in a pub in one village and emailed Contours on a Sunday afternoon asking if there was any chance we could recover them.
