About the trail

Book your walking holiday along the Suffolk Coast Path and ramble sixty miles between Lowestoft and Felixstowe. This varied route tours through the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, exploring a mix of sand and shingle beaches, famous heathland, clifftop pathways and open marshland.

Humanity’s efforts to tame the sea can be seen all along the route, including the glass sea walls at Lowestoft, historic ports like Southwold and hints of the old medieval city drowned at Dunwich. Several snaking estuaries join the sea along this walk, too, and the tidal range makes every holiday a little different. You’ll even get to bob across the River Deben yourself on a seasonal foot ferry crossing.

Suffolk Coast Path

The full Suffolk Coast Path leads the way along a stunning coastline and inland through landscapes and villages largely unchanged for decades. Along the coast, you’ll enjoy wandering long sandy beaches and lively promenades, not to mention Southwold’s brightly coloured beach huts and Victorian pier, with plenty of good spots to pause and grab an ice cream.

Inland, drop into the heritage site of Snape Maltings, populated now with galleries, cafes and independent shops. The Suffolk Coast Path leads the way through tranquil spaces full of wildlife, perhaps at their most beautiful in Dunwich Heath, where colourful heather spreads out for miles around.

Important information

Please note that the beach section between Lowestoft and Southwold is not passable at high tide. Please check the tide times here when planning your holiday dates. There are inland high tide alternatives however which would add 3-5 miles to your days walk depending on which itinerary you book.

There are ferry crossings on this tour.  An essential ferry crossing from Bawdsey to Felixstowe which operates from May to September daily and from Easter until 30th April and during October on weekends only.

Our itineraries assume you will take the Walberswick Ferry from Southwold Harbour which operates daily from the 1st of April until the last weekend of October.  If the ferry is not operating or you opt to walk around Southwold Harbour instead this will add a further 1.5 miles to your days walk.

There is also an optional weekend ferry from Orford to Butley, this ferry runs on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays only usually from Easter to mid-October. If you take this ferry, this will reduce your days walk from Orford by 3 miles.

NB: The cost for ferries is minimal and not included in the cost of your tour.

Your Itinerary

This itinerary lists our preferred overnight stops for this tour. Sometimes there may be a shortage of available accommodation in a preferred location, in which case we will transfer you from the trail to your accommodation and back again at no extra charge. Overnight stops marked with a (T) will always require transfers as standard.

Overnight stops marked with an (L) have very limited accommodation, and therefore more often than not will also require a transfer, particularly on bank holidays and weekends. We will use non-transfer accommodation wherever possible.

The daily mileages quoted are average trail miles only and do not include the distance from the trail to your accommodation. We do not expect you to have to travel more than a mile from the trail to your accommodation in most cases; should your accommodation be further than this, transfers will be provided as standard if practical. A very limited number of stops will require you to travel on foot up to two miles off the trail, however these instances will be clearly communicated to you if applicable.

Further transfers may also be required due to some accommodations having a two-night minimum booking policy, especially at weekends.

Below are the additional costs that may apply depending on your requirements. Dog-friendly tours are subject to a Daily Dog Charge, which will be listed below if applicable. Our standard prices per person are based upon two people sharing a room; if you are on your own, or are part of a group but require a room of your own, then the Solo Traveller or Single Supplements apply respectively:

Extra Nights & Rest Days

The coastal town of Lowestoft marks the starting point of your Suffolk Coast Path Holiday, and there is plenty to do should you wish to spend an extra day here before embarking on your walk. The town and surrounding area is packed with attractions and restaurants to satisfy all tastes, however perhaps the most iconic thing to do here is to visit the Ness - the UK's most easterly point - at dawn, so you can be the first person in the UK to see the morning's sunrise.

The charming village of Snape has lots to discover if you choose to spend an extra night here. The Maltings complex is a beautiful heritage site, made up of converted Victorian buildings and home to a selection of independent shops, galleries, eateries, and performance venues, including the world-famous Snape Maltings Concert Hall. Every year, the Maltings hosts the month-long Aldeburgh Music Festival in the summer, as well as the acclaimed Aldeburg Food and Drink Festival in September, giving you plenty of reason to stay and explore a little longer.

You can add rest days at any of the overnight stops:
