About the trail

Art of the Lindisfarne Castle, found on the Northumberland Coast Path. The Northumberland Coast Path walking holiday tours wild, unspoilt countryside, where castle ruins loom on the headlands above long beaches of golden sand.

This gentle, low-level walk is predominantly coastal, with one arc inland to enjoy stunning views of the coast from St Cuthbert’s Cave. Castles adorn the rocky cliffs, and at low tide, you can make your way across a tidal causeway to Holy Island to explore the extensive ruins of Lindisfarne Priory.

With plenty of beach walking between bustling seaside towns, the complete Northumberland Coast Path is a pretty, approachable and friendly section of the England Coast Path. We also offer a Northumberland Coast Highlights tour that spans 28 miles and hits our absolute favourite sections along the way.

Customer reviews from the Northumberland Coast Path

“The walk exceeded our expectations, beautiful beaches and weather.”
Mrs Dean, UK
“This was the first walk I ever did with Contours back in April 2010 (but it was then in the other direction), and I’ve wanted to revisit it for a while. It’s a stunning stretch of coastline with lots of things to see along the way. Definitely a good route to try for anyone new to long-distance walking, as it’s mainly flat and has very good waymarking.”
Mr Julyan, UK
“Beautiful part of the country - super deserted beaches excellent for a dog. Interesting historical sites along the way. Accommodation very good with friendly welcomes. Weather excellent! Lovely walking experience to discover one of Britain's best kept secrets.”
Mr Robinson, UK
