How do I choose my holiday?

We offer a wealth of different trails across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. With a wide choice of itineraries for each trail, we are confident that there is something for everyone, but if you need help choosing, our friendly and knowledgeable team will be more than happy to advise you.

Where would you like to go?

Contours Walking Holidays prides itself on boasting an unrivalled range of walking trails in the UK and Ireland. Whether you are keen to discover England’s extensive history, spot rare wildlife off the coast of Wales, conquer the impressive Scottish Highlands or immerse yourself in traditional Irish culture, we can help you find a trail to suit your tastes. Take a look at our Holiday Location Map to view our full range of trails, or browse our inspiration pages to gather more ideas.

If you would like to adjust an itinerary that we offer slightly, simply contact us with your ideas and requirements and we will be happy to discuss your options with you.

How long would you like to walk for?

Our huge range of holiday options allows our customers to walk for any length of time they wish. Our shortest breaks start from three nights and two days of walking, while our longer tours can last for several weeks. Some routes can also be joined together to create even longer holidays as required. Check out the tour itineraries listed under your chosen trail to select your ideal holiday length.

Our holidays are also customisable to suit your requirements. All of our holidays can be adjusted to incorporate extra days for resting or sight-seeing. Please contact us if you would like assistance in deciding where to spend an extra night. All extra nights must be booked at the time of booking your holiday, as they cannot be added at a later date.

Who would you like to walk with?

We happily cater for groups of up to around 16 people, including families and friends of all ages, subject to availability. If you wish to walk with a larger group, please contact us to discuss your options. If you’re planning to holiday as a group, make sure you take everyone’s experience levels into account when choosing your tour.

Solo walkers are also very welcome on our holidays. All of our walking holidays (except for the Bob Graham Round) are suitable for solo walkers.

We haven’t forgotten about man’s best friend either! We offer a range of dog friendly walks for those wishing to walk with their canine companions. Check out our list of dog friendly holidays for more information.

How much of a challenge would you like?

There are many factors that contribute to the difficulty of a trail, such as the daily mileage, terrain and ascents/descents along the route, as well as the typical weather conditions of the area and your group’s personal ability or experience. The grades below are only a general indication of a tour’s difficulty, however they – along with your chosen trail’s route profile – should help you decide which holiday is best suited to your abilities. Remember that all walkers, regardless of the holiday grade you choose, should know how to read a UK Ordnance Survey/Harvey Map and use a compass.

  • Easy: Generally between 5 - 8 miles (8 - 13km) walking per day. Tours graded as Easy may involve a few short ascents/descents and varied terrain. This grade allows for walking at a leisurely pace with plenty of time to explore sites of interest along the route. Easy tours are ideal for novice walkers or those embarking on their first long-distance walking holiday.
  • Moderate: Generally between 8 – 12 miles (13 – 19km) walking per day. Tours graded as Moderate may involve some longer or steeper ascents/descents or longer low level walks. The terrain will be varied and paths may be uneven underfoot. Moderate tours are suitable for regular walkers with a good level of fitness.
  • Demanding: Generally between 12 - 16 miles (19 – 25.5km) walking per day. Tours graded as Demanding are typically more challenging, with longer/steeper ascents/descents or longer low level walks. The terrain will be varied and paths could be rough or rocky in places. Demanding tours are suitable for experienced walkers with a strong level of fitness.
  • Strenuous: Generally 16+ miles (25.5km) walking per day. Tours graded as Strenuous involve long, challenging walking days with some prolonged ascents/descents (some scrambling may be involved) or longer lower level walking. The terrain will be varied and tough under foot in places. A strong level of fitness and previous mountain walking experience are both essential for Strenuous tours.

If you are unsure of which grade to choose, or have any questions concerning distances or terrain covered on your preferred trail, please contact us and we will be happy to help.

When would you like to go?

You can start your holiday on any date that you choose within your chosen trail’s season, subject to availability. Details of the season for each holiday can be found on the trail description pages of our website. All of our walking holidays are available from March to October, but many are available during the winter months too.

Please be aware that if your ideal holiday dates coincide with a public holiday or a local event, availability of accommodation becomes very limited very quickly. During these times it is advisable to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Our team at Contours Walking Holidays are always on hand to advise you on availability throughout the year.

How much will your holiday cost?

We understand the importance of providing clear pricing for all of our tours. The tour prices, which are per person, are based upon two people booking and sharing a twin or double room. If you wish to add extra nights into your holiday, the cost of these is shown below the tour price. Any other special customisations can be requested prior to booking and priced as required.

Supplements
Solo walkers are subject to a supplement to cover the extra costs of a single room or single occupancy of twin or double rooms, as well as baggage transfers for one rather than two people and for providing a set of maps and a guidebook for one rather than two people. The cost of the solo walker supplement is shown next to the itinerary of your chosen tour.

Single walkers who book as part of a group, but require a room of their own, are subject to our Single Supplement for the same reason. The single supplement cost next to the itinerary of your chosen tour.

Walkers who wish to bring their dogs on one of our dog-friendly holidays are subject to a Daily Dog Charge per dog, per walking day. This covers the costs of transporting your dogs’ luggage and any additionaly transfers that may be required to and from your dog-friendly accommodation. The Daily Dog Charge is shown next to the itinerary of your chosen tour for all dog friendly trails.

Discounts
Discounts are available for groups of three or more people booking a tour together. We calculate our prices on the assumption that there will be two people sharing the fixed costs (such as luggage transportation, holiday packs and administrative costs etc.) As a result, we offer reduced rates for groups of three or more people booking a tour together. The size of the group discount depends on the number of people in your group.

As a way of saying thank you to our many loyal customers, we also offer the following loyalty discounts: save 5% when booking your 5th to 14th walking holidays, and save 7.5% when booking your 15th walking holiday and any subsequent trips thereafter. When booking your next Contours Holiday, simply tell us that you qualify for a loyalty discount and list the holidays you've taken with us before.

Please note that the above loyalty discount and group discount cannot be used together, or in conjunction with any other promotion.

If your friends are new to us and they book a holiday with us following your recommendation, we’ll give you a voucher for £25 off your next booking, and at the same time we'll give your friend an introductory gift of £25 off their booking. When your friend decides to book a holiday with us, they simply need to tell us that they are eligible for the 'Refer a friend' offer and provide your name and address in order to redeem your rewards. Exclusions apply.

As well as all of this, we frequently update our list of special offers with new deals and discounts, so that our customers can enjoy even better value for money. Visit our Special Offers page for more details.

Please note that if you book your holiday online and quote a discount, voucher, or special offer code, these will be manually deducted from the cost of your holiday after you have submitted your booking. Your holiday acknowledgement email and invoice will reflect this accordingly.

Vouchers
Contours Holidays Gift Vouchers are available to purchase from our website, which make the ideal gift for a loved one who enjoys hiking in the Great British countryside. Our gift vouchers can be credited with any amount and can be applied to any of our holidays. Visit our Gift Vouchers page for more information.

If you have any further questions or queries, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to advise you.
