A coast-to-coast tour of the Tamar Valley, following the border of Cornwall and Devon.
From £535 per person
Follow the shared border of Devon and Cornwall from Plymouth to Morwenstow on the Tamara Coast to Coast Way. This well-publicised, 92-mile-long trail loosely follows the route of the River Tamar, tracing its journey upstream through the Tamar Valley National Landscape and onward north along country lanes to the far sea.
The southern half is particularly special, meandering along the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail through lush woodland and farmland between hamlets nestled amongst the greenery, with several historic sites to explore along the way. We’ve picked this section out for our recommended Tamara Highlights tour.
Road walking makes up a significant portion of the northern half of the full trail, with long stretches between high Cornish hedges. The Tamara Way rewards you for your efforts at the pretty Tamar Lakes and the stunning Hartwell Heritage Coast as the trail nears the sea, but it is hard work between them; if this concerns you and the Highlights tour doesn't appeal, consider the Tarka Trail as a great mix of coastal and inland walking in Devon, while the Land’s End Round offers the same in far western Cornwall. The Two Moors Way is a great coast-to-coast option, too.
A large part of the Tamara Coast to Coast’s appeal lies in the way it links to the South West Coast Path at either end, allowing for an epic circular tour along the coast and border of Cornwall, but the trail is an interesting linear adventure in its own right.
From £535 per person
This recommended shorter tour takes in the best and most beautiful stretch of the Tamara Coast to Coast Way: the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail. Here, you’ll avoid the high percentage of road walking that afflicts the full-length route.
Commencing from the Tamar suspension bridge near Saltash, the Tamara Coast to Coast Highlights tour progresses from Plymouth’s urban cityscape into beautiful wooded countryside along the banks of the River Tamar, with a wealth of weirs, bridges and viaducts to take in. Pass through the scenic villages of Calstock, Gunnislake and Milton Abbot, each with its own personality and stories to tell.
Until the summer Calstock Ferry starts operating again, this walk requires a short 7 minute train journey from Bere Alston to Calstock. Trains only run every two hours, therefore careful planning of your day’s walk to/via Calstock will be required. Please check the train times here. The train cost is minimal and not included in the cost of your tour.
This tour concludes in Lifton, where you can celebrate the end of your holiday with a well-earned drink in one of their friendly pubs.
